Feb 20-2026
On 16 February 2026, H.E. Professor Mrs. Esi Awuah had the pleasure of visiting Afia, a first-generation Ghanaian in the diaspora who runs a thriving plant business in Switzerland. It was inspiring to witness her passion for greenery and sustainable living, reflected in her beautiful collection of plants.
Their conversation extended beyond plant care to Ghana and the importance of staying connected to home. Afia, who has not visited Ghana in the past ten years, was encouraged by Her Excellency to reconnect. She indicated her intention to visit the Embassy to renew her passport in preparation for a return visit. Her Excellency also encouraged Afia’s friend, who was present, to consider visiting Ghana, noting that reconnection strengthens identity, opportunity and partnership.
The visit initially stemmed from Her Excellency’s desire to seek advice about a plant in her office that had not been thriving. Afia explained that the office microclimate may be too dry, a reminder that even small environmental conditions significantly affect growth. The interaction served as a valuable sustainability lesson that context is essential, whether in plant care or national development.
Among the plants highlighted during the visit was a vibrant Begonia, the red plant Her Excellency was holding. Beyond its beauty, Begonias are known for their air-purifying qualities and their potential to support well-being. Nature often contributes quietly to our health and productivity.
The visit also underscored the importance of supporting Ghanaian entrepreneurs in the diaspora. Their resilience and innovation reflect the strength of the global Ghanaian community. Every renewed connection reinforces the bonds between Ghana and its citizens abroad.
Through continued engagement, the Mission remains committed to building bridges, strengthening connections between Ghana and its citizens abroad while promoting sustainability and enterprise.
