Mar 20-2026
On March 16, 2026, H.E. Prof. Mrs. Esi Awuah received Mr. Pascal-Jean Bernhard, Director of Waste-to-Energy, who paid a visit to the Mission to present innovative solutions for sustainable waste management and energy production.
During the meeting, Mr. Bernhard introduced the Swiss Way Waste-to-Energy concept, which utilizes pyrolysis technology to convert plastic waste into valuable energy products such as diesel, naphtha and kerosene, without the need for incineration.
The system is designed to operate within a 24-hour circular economy model for solid waste management. Organic waste can be converted into biogas or compost, while plastics and other materials are processed into useful energy resources. Notably, the system is designed to be self-sustaining, operating independently of the national electricity grid and includes technology capable of harvesting water from the atmosphere to support its operations.
Her Excellency and her guest also discussed the concept of waste mining from existing refuse dumpsites - an approach that involves recovering valuable materials and energy resources from accumulated waste while contributing to the reclamation of polluted land.
Mr. Bernhard indicated that investors are ready to support the initiative and Her Excellency noted that the Mission is currently awaiting a detailed presentation to facilitate the development of a comprehensive business plan for potential investment.
Her Excellency emphasized that innovative solutions of this nature are particularly promising as Ghana continues to explore opportunities to leverage advanced Swiss technologies and systems. Such collaborations have the potential to create jobs, improve environmental management and advance sustainable development.
