On 20 February 2026, H.E. Professor Mrs. Esi Awuah visited Tropical Zone Shop in Berne, owned by Nana, a young Ghanaian businesswoman who proudly serves the African community.
While there to purchase “prekese”, known in English as Aidan fruit, for her tea, Her Excellency had the pleasure of meeting customers from Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The encounter was heartwarming and served as a reminder of how African food connects people beyond borders.
Seeing familiar staples such as yam, plantain, cocoyam, and smoked fish brought a sense of home. African cuisine carries memory, culture, and community wherever it is found.
The visit also highlighted the importance of supporting Ghanaian entrepreneurs in the diaspora. Nana was commended for providing an essential service and for strengthening bonds within the African community abroad.
